Our History

EAROPH was founded in 1956 in New Delhi, India, during a time when third-world developing countries were beginning to value their traditional values and sociocultural identities. The accelerated progress, especially in Asia, stimulated urban planning and affordable housing concerns. Based on this realization, EAROPH was founded on the idea that culturally attuned professionals from many professions would best manage these challenges.

EAROPH was formally established in accordance with its newly formulated constitution during the 2nd EAROPH International Congress held in Tokyo, Japan, in 1960. Subsequently, through its parent organization, the International Federal of Housing and Planning (IFHP), EAROPH obtained non-governmental organization (NGO) status from the United Nations (UN).

The EAROPH International Secretariat was relocated from New Delhi, India, to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in 1978 and receives some funding from the Malaysian government via the Ministry of Local Government Development.
